Tasty Egypt!

So a coworker's parents are on their way to Cairo in a few weeks. He asked me for some restaurants to try and brought me memories of some of the best foods I've eaten out so I made a list. Then I realized this must be good for others so, here goes:

IN CAIRO:

Dish: Koshari (Rice, lentils, fried onions, macaroni and a deadly sauce mix):
Restaurant: Hend
Area: Heliopolis

Note: This is a nice part of town where there are lots of nice cafes and such hangouts.

Dish: Hamam Belfereek (Stuffed Pigeons - they should eat the whole thing, bones et al):
Restaurant: Farahaat
Area: Al-Azhar

Note: This is in the core of one of the historic areas in Cairo filled with ancient mosques and antique houses etc.

Dish: Mashawi - Egyptian BBQ (I recommend the following order for 2: 1 Kilogram ( ¼ Kabab, ¼ Kofta, ¼ Tarb and ¼ Neefa )
Restaurant: Al-Refaaie
Area: Al Sayyedah Zainab

Note: Also a very historic area and very close to the Islamic History Museum which a must-visit as well.

Dish1: Molokheyya soup
Dish2: Kibdah - Liver (veal, camel, and others!)
Restaurant: El-Berens (the prince)
Area: Imbaba

Note: The area here is very cheap very common, you can get a cup of tea with fresh mint in the surrounding coffee shops for as little as 1 egyptian pound ( about 20 cents Canadian!) but not very interesting otherwise.

IN ALEXANDRIA (if they plan to go… it’s a lovely city and worth the visit… train ride takes max 2-3 hours depending on their train choice):

Dish: seafood and BBQ
Restaurant: Balbaa
Area: Sidi Bishr

Note: Close to the coastal road and many attractions
